03 Caerus – opportunity. RELAXATION MUSIC. Singularity – Spirits of Life Album

A series of meditative pieces based on positive life traits and their associated Greek mythological spirits. The pieces are gently improvised as two live performances. The first is the background cinematic layer performed in one take on a full octave weighted keyboard linked to a Spectrasonics Omnisphere, ambient or pad sound. The second is a one take performance over this soundscape on an Akai Ewi 4000 self contained electronic wind instrument (looks a little like a Soprano sax) which has many different sounds across the tracks.

The visuals on the accompanying videos are from a fractal based real time, synchronised visualisation program called G-Force Platinum by SoundSpectrum Inc: captured by SnapzPro and re-syncd to the master audio.

All the tracks have a subliminal background of an Australian dawn chorus, recorded at Garys Wentworth Falls house in October (Australian Spring). There a many birds including Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Magpie, Rozellas, Australian Parrots, Kookaburras and a constant sound of three local Lyre birds scraping around the ground and imitating all the birds above.

We hope you find the pieces relaxing but also powerful and inspiring. There will be more albums like this to come and keep an eye on Garys music and photography site at http://garyphayes.com for developments.

Recorded 15-30 October 2014 in three sessions only at Wentworth Falls, Blue Mountains, Australia

Ayung Trance Cm

Overlooking the Ayung river on my room balcony one of a few improvisations in-between scooter photo trips & other usual holiday activities – rather rough 1st or 2nd takes and a lot Tangerine Dream’esque, Cm mood. With live recorded natural sound and some superimposed shots on my GoPro helmet cam, used for other projects too.

Technically – the Micron is playing only the pad sound, while the A4 is being midi triggered individually across its 4 sequence tracks. The sounds were quickly prepared before the take from init tones and adjusted ocassionally during the take…

Ayung Reflections F#

Overlooking the Ayung river on my room balcony, another improvisation in-between scooter photo trips & other usual holiday activities – rather rough 1st or 2nd takes, this one is a F# major pentatonic (all the black notes) with a subtle asian feel :). With live recorded natural sound and some superimposed shots on my GoPro helmet cam from various photo bike tours around Bali, used for other projects too.

Laurentia

A more down tempo, ambient live jam on my evolving OTB (outside the box) setup – leading to an impro album this year called Sequentations. This has 7 nice polyrhythmic sequences that evolve and overlap nicely. The setup was only 40 mins setting all the original sounds up, a preset on the Nave (iPad) and some Kaoss presets…finally two blippy sounds in the Machinedrum. I added some timelapse footage I took the over week to cover up the end as I ran out of footage (I record camera and sound separately) – but then added the same snippets throughout sections of the piece…took minutes and are placed randomly, so they may or may not fit

Have added a DBX compressor into the set-up which means there is no mastering on this one – what you hear is straight out of the mixer hopefully tighter dynamic range.

Analog Four sound & sequences done an hour or so before the recording with a simple machine drum pattern also. This goal of this one is to get a little more into a trancey in technical style, still a ways to go, but happy with this slightly disco throw back hybrid 🙂

The stereo compressor is being side-chained by the bass drum & all peak instruments on this one – so all instruments are fed into mixer on a sub-channel and routed through the ducking compressor. I reduced the effect somewhat for this track as it didn’t need it…

Magelloid

At the beginning of the piece I am just showing whats on each of the A4 tracks, the Magellan pad, the rhythmic elements of the machine drum and the Kaoss (NOTE: this is not the piece 🙂 – Another analog synth noodle. This time a more relaxed exposition in Dm with two different development sections. Was actually trying a few challenges here, one was to get an Analog 4 sequence sounding like an Australian Kookaburra (see if you can spot it throughout the piece!), as well as all eight Analog 4 tracks working together. A supporting mix of rhythm sounds from the MachineDrum, a single ‘big pad’ on the Magellan and some trumpet and flute sounding Kaoss Pro pad rounds it off.

I keep wanting to switch to more progressive trance style with this setup but as soon as I get some sequences going to moves towards something much more traditional and melodic – next one!

Cryomanic

More live impros on my evolving OTB (outside the box) setup – leading to an impro album this year called Sequentations.

This time a simple Am tune with surrounding build and bridging expositions. Analog Four sound & sequences done an hour or so before the recording and machine drum pattern also. This was done at half tempo to get a longer four bar chord progression feel, but it looses those semi quavers!

This piece is structured around some ground up sounds and pre-built sequences in the A4 just before the jam and a mix of solos on Kaoss and iPad. This piece is attempting to be a little more popular dance orientated but falls between stools methinks, but I like the overall structures and how the 8 sequences gel on the A4

Ocean Landing

On-going tweaking and practise with a setup to do an album this year called Sequentations. The analog fours are being used at 2% of their potential and not what they are built for :), a lot more to come from them and darker more edgy tracks, for now some light Major chord relief 🙂

Tech details: The Analog four (left) is driving the 2nd A4, KaossPro and iPad drums (with compensation so it is tight). The micron audio is fed through the Left A4, the Kaoss audio is fed through the right A4 so they both use the lovely verb and delay. The iPad app is FunkBox which was the only one that allowed me to get the drums almost CV locked. Both A4s are using riffs and sequences I preset with lots of lfo activity so I don’t need to manually change for this simple type piece.

Orentica

In Cm another Analog Four sound & sequence prepared live jam (the sounds and sequences generally take around 1 hour to set up and are not that interesting to watch 🙂 well the sequence creation is I suppose) This track is two 15 min impros joined with the 2nd one first, around 13 mins in I left in some random parameter trig settings on one track completely unplanned but something I want to do more of once I have the sounds in some sort of reasonable order!

This piece is structured around some ground up sounds and pre-built sequences in the A4 just before the jam and a mix of solos on Kaoss, A4 and Micron. I have put the whole piece up and yes it does ramble – for the high quality audio captures for the album of all of these I will be sub editing into 7-8 minute pieces for the album…this takes a little longer and I think they make nice background pieces in their longer jam mode?

Yosemati

Minus drums! A very Tangerine Dream’esque live jam with bits of Vangelis & Jarre 🙂 in Dm. More live impros on my evolving OTB (outside the box) setup – leading to an impro album this year called Sequentations.

Different World

All sounds are sculptured from scratch just before this take and apologies for the Jarre/TDream channeling here 🙂 This felt the most comfortable jam so far in that there were far less ‘performance pauses’ and the over story arc worked for me better…Part of an on-going evening and weekend project – tweaking and fine tuning a setup as part of an album this year called Sequentations.

Metero Video – Piano, Elec Guitar Impro

Done as an impro experiment in 30 minutes on Sat 16 Feb 2013. The piano was done in one take (then a synth pad and vocal sound taken directly from its midi). Then the guitar was added without rehearsal, it is dipped in a couple of small places where it loses focus 🙂 Video was from a stream of library videos I had already compiled. Gary Hayes plays Ibanez Electric Guitar, Piano + Logic and Sylenth + Omnisphere. Video by Gary Hayes
